[1989 - 1991]
The Degree
I ventured into the Communications Industry in 1991 just after receiving
my Bachelor of Arts (Journalism, Communications, Psychology, Drama) from the
University of Central Queensland (Rockhampton Qld).
[1992]
From Newsletters to Newspapers
After 9 months in the family publishing business managing
production of a group of rural newsletters I departed North
Qld for the four seasons of Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula
where I quickly secured a position with a community
newspaper.
[1992
- 1994] 'Mac Operator'
The advertised position was for a 'Mac Operator'. What started as an
interview quickly turned into me sitting at the 'Mac' setting ads until 7.30
that night!
I spent 18 months at 'The Flyer' learning first hand every aspect of
newspaper publishing. For the first 12 months I set the entire newspaper
using a very early version of Adobe PageMaker on a Macintosh SE! (for those
that don't know what this machine looks like - the screen is about the size
of a landscape piece of A5 paper!).
I initiated a change in layout for the newspaper from A5 booklet to Tabloid
while injecting my own creative style to the pages.
As
well as setting the entire newspaper including most of the
advertising I wrote articles, sub-edited contributed copy and took
the occasional photograph.
Fast forward to Sydney October 1994 and salvation from the fortnightly all nighters
that go hand in hand with tight budget community newspaper production.

[1995

the development of a new business came the opportunity to utilise
the publishing, promotion and management skills I had gained in
the past 4 years. [1999-2003]
